NATIONAL BESTSELLER • An “addictive, thoughtful” novel (Entertainment Weekly) that brings us through the thrilling, bewildering years of early adulthood while pulling us inside the circle of three friends, perfectly capturing the wild frustrations and soaring joys of modern life. Isabella, Mary, and Lauren feel like everyone they know is getting married. On Sunday after Sunday, at bridal shower after bridal shower, they coo over toasters, collect ribbons and wrapping paper, eat minuscule sandwiches and cakes. They wear pastel dresses and drink champagne by the case, but amid the celebration these women have their own lives to contend with: Isabella is working a dead-end job, Mary is dating a nice guy with an awful mother, and Lauren is waitressing at a midtown bar and wondering why she's attracted to the sleazy bartender.
Girls in White Dresses is a hysterical and very realistic portrayal of what life is like for girls graduating from college and making their way through their 20's and into their 30's. I agree with another reviewer that this book is more than just a comedy about a group of friends drinking too much and attending an endless stretch of weddings and showers (although these stories certainly provide a lot of entertainment throughout the book!). Through her characters, Jennifer Close makes astute observations of the fun times and the challenges we experience as we attempt to establish careers, develop new relationships and maintain relationships with friends whose lives are going in different directions. Many of the stories brought up similar memories I have from my childhood and my adulthood, and I felt as though she could have been writing about me and my friends. I think this book will be extremely relatable to most women in their 20's and 30's.Jennifer Close's writing is very clever and witty - I laughed out loud throughout the entire book. Girls in White Dresses is a great book and I'm really looking forward to more from Jennifer Close in the future!
