Product Description

Brimming with characters you feel you've known forever, Girls in White Dresses announces a strikingly original new voice, chronicling the struggles and unexpected joys of modern life.Isabella, Mary and Lauren's friend Kristi is engaged and they are all bridesmaids. Despite being happy for their friend, by the sixth shower they are really sick of celebrating her. Saturday after Saturday they coo over toaster ovens and deep fat fryers. They collect wrapping paper and ribbons, tying them to paper plates. But beneath the toasting and clapping, we see these women struggling amid the celebration. Isabella dreams of quitting her job at a mailing list company, where she's both extremely successful and wildly unhappy. Mary falls deeply in love, realizing too late that her new mother-in-law is really her husband's favorite. And Lauren, single and adrift, finds herself drawn to a man she's pretty sure she hates.Wry, hilarious, and utterly recognizable, Girls in White Dresses follows these women as they maneuver their way through blind dates and ski vacations, boozy lunches and family holidays, through relationships lost to politics and others found in a pet store. From the Hardcover edition.

I really liked this book - it was like a trip down memory lane. I may not have been exactly like the characters - but I saw parts of myself and people I knew in each of them. I do agree that it was hard at times to keep the girls straight, and they each seemed to blend into one another (but maybe that was the point). It accurately captures the lost feeling and pressures of your early 20's - the dead-end jobs, hopeless relationships, and trying to keep your life moving forward. Sure, there were parts of the book where the girls were silly and/or selfish - but isn't that what your early 20s are about? I felt that as the book progressed, the girls grew up a bit and I cheered them along. There were some especially funny parts that I laughed so hard I cried at - namely a ski trip and a particular conversation at the end with an older sister who just had a baby. I am 29, and definitely felt for and related to the characters in this book - the scenes at the baby showers and friends who turn into bridezillas ("I just really wanted my bridal shower to me about ME!") were so true. Not only that, but the book had some heartbreaking moments too that touched on divorce and fertility issues, among other family, friend and relationship woes. Overall, I thought this was a great book - relevant, touching and hilarious - for anyone in their mid 20's to mid 30's, and a reminder that yes, it does get better.
